1969–70 NHL season

The NHL season 1969/70 was the 53rd season in the National Hockey League. 12 teams each played 76 games. The Stanley Cup won by the Boston Bruins for a 4-0 win in the final series against the St. Louis Blues.

In its third year, the new team had their distance to the established " Original Six " can not reduce. Again, were the Blues their representatives in the final and again they remained without even a victory. It was the season of Bobby Orr and here the experts are agreed, it was the most outstanding season who has ever had a single player in the NHL. So far, existing records tumbled and Orr raised the bar in unimaginable heights. Last year, Pat Stapleton had set up with 50 assists a template record, Orr had caught up with him already on 15 January. Three days later his own record with 64 points was due by a defender. Exactly one month later, it was his own record of 21 goals by a defender, who now belonged to the past. 33 goals, 87 templates and thus 120 points were the new records, but not the absolute numbers, but the comparison with the old values made this season so special. Never again will a player has the records so improved and there has never been a defender of the best scorer of the season. Also in the Play Offs the records before Orr were not sure. The records for defenders were here since 1938 with 5 goals in Babe Siebert and since 1962 with 16 points at Tim Horton. Bobby was here with 9 goals 11 assists and 20 points, the measure of all things. At the end of the season he was honored with four trophies.

The play of the defense in the NHL and the expectations it was no longer what it was before the season. Was there anything else this season? Yes! In Chicago, a young goalkeeper made a stir. Tony Esposito managed in his rookie season 15 shutouts which was a record for a rookie and had done no more goalie since the late 1920s. This year, Terry Sawchuk died, perhaps the best goalie in the NHL history at the age of just 40 years. He succumbed to the severe injuries he had, sustained in an altercation with his teammate Ron Stewart in his garden. Two other ruffians caused a stir. In a preseason game Boston's Ted Green and Wayne Maki came from St. Louis to one another. The two forgot what the thugs were actually there and delivered a spectacular battle.
