Fukushima (Fukushima)

Fukushima ( [ ɸɯkɯɕima ], jap福岛 市, -shi, dt "Happiness Island" ) is a Japanese city and the administrative seat of the homonymous prefecture of Fukushima in the northeast of the main island Honshu.

Geography

Fukushima is a large town 50 km inland and about 250 kilometers north of the capital Tokyo.

It extends over a length of 30 kilometers along the river Abukuma within the southern Fukushima Basin (福岛 盆地, Fukushima bonchi ). To the west and north of the administrative area, the ou mountains and in the east the Abukuma Highlands extends.

History

In the 15th century, Fukushima was built as a castle and supply station. The present city was founded on April 1, 1907 through the merger of several municipalities. Fukushima had on February 1, 2014 283 329 inhabitants and is the third largest city in the prefecture.

The name of the city and prefecture gained worldwide notoriety in March 2011, after about 60 kilometers southeast of the city had occurred the Fukushima nuclear disaster.

Economy

Fukushima is considered the industry and trade center. Economically significant addition to the traditional silk industry today, the production and processing of synthetic fibers, the production of food and machinery. Important for tourism are approximately 130 hot spring sources such as the Iizaka, the Takayu and the Tsuchiya - source, which are an important economic factor because of the resulting many hotels. The area is also known for the cultivation of rice and fruit and the production of rice wine sake.
