Template: Infobox city in Portugal / Maintenance / Web page is blank Gavião [ ɡɐviɐu ] is a small town ( Vila ) and a circle ( concelho ) in Portugal with 4145 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011).

History

The Romans settled here, motivated by the fertile soils. The present town was built in the course of the Reconquista and the associated with it repopulation in the 12th and 13th centuries. A castle was built here, and King Sancho I gave the territory to the Hospitallers. King Manuel I granted the town city rights in 1519. The independent circuit since 1895 was dissolved and Nisa attached to his own seat of a circle since 1898 again.

Culture and sights

The museum Museu do Sabão shows the history of the soap and the tradition of soap production in a circle. In the village Domingos da Vinha, in the town of Bellver, the local museum is Museu de Domingos da Vinha dedicated local traditions of country life.

In the 1194 built and 1390 converted Castelo de Bellver medieval markets are organized. Below the castle lies the River Swimming Pool ( Portuguese: Praia fluvial ) Quinta do Alamal. Bath possibilities also exist on Barragem de Bellver. At the 1952 -built dam and fishing and numerous water sports on offer, including windsurfing and sailing.

Architectural monuments include a number of Gavião religious buildings, two stone fountain, a living block of social housing, and various historic homes and public buildings, including the cinema building. The historic center as a whole is also a listed building.

Gavião is the administrative seat of the homonymous district. The neighboring districts are (clockwise starting from the north ): Mação, Nisa, Crato, Ponte de Sor and Abrantes.
