The Ginásio do Maracanazinho (short: Maracanazinho German Small Maracanã. ) Is a sports and entertainment venue in the Brazilian metropolis of Rio de Janeiro. She wears officially named Ginásio Gilberto Cardoso after a former President of the CR Flamengo. Gilberto Ferreira Cardoso was 1951-1955 president of the club and died in office at a basketball game of his club to a heart attack.

At present, the hall has 11,800 seats. The Ginásio do Maracanazinho is located right next to the football stadium Estádio do Maracanã as well as the swimming stadium Parque AquatiCo Júlio Delamare and is part of Complexo Esportivo do Maracanã ( Maracanã German sports complex ). At the 2016 Summer Olympics in the arena the volleyball competitions are held.

History

The inauguration took place on 24 September 1954. Soon after opening the first major event in Maracanazinho took place. It served as a venue for the Basketball World Championship 1954, which was held from October 22 to November 5th. At the championships, the Arena had a capacity of 25,000 visitors. Nine years later, the basketball world championship again made station in Maracanazinho. When playing at home the Brazilian national basketball team was able to defend her title in 1959.

In addition to the sporting events, there were also concerts and other cultural events. There were, inter alia, the group Secos & Molhados, Maria Bethânia, Gilberto Gil, Chico Buarque, Ney Matogrosso, Caetano Veloso, Tom Jobim and Geraldo Vandré on. So was 1966 to 1972, the music festival Festival Internacional da Canção instead. The election of Miss Brasil was from 1958 to 1969 and from 1971 to 1972 as a guest in Maracanazinho. The pageant in 1970 had to be moved in the Pavilhão de São Cristóvão of Rio, since a fire destroyed the interior roof lining.

In 1975, the ice revue Holiday on Ice has appeared in the Sports Hall. In 1982, the men's volleyball tournament Mundialito was held in Maracanazinho. The final of the tournament preparation for the World Cup 1982 hosts Brazil won in a tight final against the Soviet Union with 3-2 records after 3:25 hours. The arena was, besides Brasília and Curitiba, one of three venues of the Volleyball World Championship Men 1990. Besides the games in Group A with the hosts found the semi-finals, the 3rd place match and the final in Rio de Janeiro instead.

Renovation

In October 2003, the Ginásio do Maracanazinho closed its doors for an extensive renovation in view of the volleyball competitions in the Pan American Games in 2007. Here, the round building was, inter alia, a new domed roof of a steel structure with translucent plastic element. This ensures that the hall can be supplied with natural light and fresh air. The hall was furthermore equipped with air conditioning and under the roof you installed a video cube. The stands were also newly built, so that viewers from all seats have a good view. The stands 150 special places were created for disabled spectators. The lower grandstand area can be moved for various cultural events such as concerts or shows. The hall floor was increased by 60 centimeters. At the inputs of two spiral ramps were built for better accessibility.

The total financial volume of the renovations amounted to R $ 97 million ( approximately EUR 36.6 million ). The capacity decreased from 13,613 to 11,800 seats. After the conversion, the sports hall for volleyball, basketball, handball, futsal and tennis is equipped.

On 30 June 2007, the Arena will host the women's volleyball game between Brazil and Serbia ( 3-1 ) could be reopened. In the volleyball competitions of the Pan American Games in 2007, the Brazilians won on 28 July 2007, the gold medal with a 3-0 in the final against the United States. For women, the Brazilians defeated in the final on 19 July 2007, the team from Cuba with 2:3 sets.

Calçada da Fama do Maracanazinho

On 18 April 2009, the Hall of Fame Fama do Maracanazinho opened called calçada there in the hall. There Brazilian but also foreign athletes will be honored.
