The municipality Gjøvik in Norway has a total area of 672 km ² with a north- south extent of 36.6 km and an east- west distance of 30.3 km (rivers and lakes in the calculation of the extent of 31.5 km ). It has 29 389 inhabitants ( as of March 31, 2013), of which about 18,000 live in the center and 2,600 students at the University of Gjøvik. The population density is 44 inhabitants per square kilometer. The community is the largest in the province (county ) Oppland on the western shore of Lake Mjøsa and is administered by the town Gjøvik. Larger districts are Snertingdal, Biri, Gjøvik and Hunndal. The highest elevation is the Ringsrudåsen with a height of 842 meters.

History and Industry

Gjøvik 1861 collected for independent municipality. The city was built around the industry that developed on the river and on Hunnselv Mjøsa. Gjøvik Glasværk was the first factory. Today Gjøvik is an important trade and service center in Germany. Main employers are the hospital, the university Gjøvik, Mustad ( fish hook ), Hunton ( insulating material) and Hoff ( potato products). Mustad has shifted in recent years, large parts of the production to China. The shopping center ( "CC Mart'n " ) is the largest between Oslo and Trondheim.

Traffic

Gjøvikbanen forms the rail link to Oslo.

Attractions

Tourist attractions include the oldest operating paddle steamer, the open air museum Eiktunet that Fjellhall - largest audience hall in a Mountains, the historic glass factory and the event site Gjøvik Farm. The Fjellhall was blown up for the Hockey Games of the Olympic Games in 1994 in Lillehammer in the rock, at the edge of the city center under the mountain Hovdetoppen. Today it is used for concerts, flea markets, and hockey. In addition, it houses the only indoor swimming pool in Gjøvik.

Gjøvik region

Gjøvik is also the name of the region to which the municipalities Gjøvik, Østre - dead, Vestre dead, Nordre and Sondre country belong. The region has a population of 70,000 and is the most populous region of Oppland.
