Gombe State

Gombe is a state of Nigeria with its capital at Gombe, the ( 2005), with 250 278 inhabitants and largest city in the state.

Geography

The state is located in the northeast of the country, bordered to the north and north- east by the Yobe State, on the south by the state of Taraba, on the west by the Bauchi State, on the east by the Borno State and to the southeast by the state of Adamawa. The state crosses the River Gongola, the longest tributary of the Benue.

Population

The Gombe State is mainly populated by the people of the Fulani, which are sometimes combined with the Hausa Hausa - Fulani to the population group. By far the largest religious community in Gombe are Sunni Muslims. Therefore, the state has officially introduced Islamic law, the Sharia as a source of legislation recently. However, Sharia only in areas with a majority Muslim population validity.

An estimated 7.8 percent of the total population in Gombe State are infected with HIV.

History

The state was formed on 1 October 1996 from a part of the state of Bauchi. First administrator was between October 7, 1996 and August 1998 Joseph I. Oriji.

Current governor since May 29, 2003 Mohammed Danjuma Goje.

Management

The State is divided into eleven Local Government Areas. These are: Akko, Balanga, Billiri, Dukku, Funakaye, Gombe, Kaltungo, Kwani, Nafada, Shomgom and Yamaltu - Deba.

Economy

The working population of Gombe is mainly employed in agriculture. The climatic and ecological conditions allow, among others, yet the cultivation of cereals, millet, maize and rice.
