Delta State

Delta is a federal republic of Nigeria with its capital at Asaba, Warri is the largest city with 536 068 inhabitants ( 2005).

Geography

The state is located in the south of the country, bordered to the north by the state of Edo, to the south by the Bayelsa State, in the north- west by the Ondo State, on the southwest by the Atlantic Ocean, on the northeast by the Anambra State and to the southeast by the Rivers State.

Population

There are many ethnic groups, such as Urhobo, Itsekiri, Isoko, Ijaw and Ibo with different languages ​​many clans, mutual conflicts and rebel groups such as the " Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta " ( MEND ).

History

The state was formed on August 27, 1991 from a part of the state of Edo. First administrator was between August 28th 1991 and January 1992 Luke Chijiuba Ochulor. Current governor since May 29, 2007 Emmanuel Uduaghan.

The state is divided into 25 Local Government Areas. These are: Aniocha North, South Aniocha, Bomadi, Burutu, Ethiope East, Ethiope West, Ika North, Ika South, Isoko North, Isoko South, Ndokwa East, Ndokwa West, Okpe, Oshimili North, Oshimili South, Patani, Sapele, Udu, Ughelli North, Ughelli South, Ukwuani, Uvwie, Warri North, Warri South and Warri South -West.

Economy

Major industries in the state are fishing as well as agriculture and forestry.

There are grown among other cassava, yams and potatoes but also glass and timber produced and promoted oil. Delta is crude oil production behind the Rivers State in second place. In Warri are the second largest petroleum refinery in the country and a number of petrochemical plants. But the oil also threatens fisheries and fuels ethnic conflict.
