Gordon Barnhart

Gordon L. Barnhart, SOM ( born January 22, 1945 in Saltcoats ) is a Canadian historian and civil servant. From 2006 to 2012, he was the Vice- Governor of the Province of Saskatchewan and as such represented the head of state, Queen Elizabeth II, at the provincial level.

Biography

Barnhart graduated in 1967 his history studies at the University of Saskatchewan from and then taught at a middle school in North Battleford. From 1969 to 1984 he was the administrative head of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan ( when he took office, he was the youngest in a Parliament of the Commonwealth ). On the recommendation of the Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney Governor General Jeanne Sauvé appointed him in 1989 to the administrative head of the Canadian Senate ( Clerk of the Senate ). After five years in office, he stepped back and his doctorate in 1998.

From 2000 to 2005 Barnhart was secretary of the University of Saskatchewan and gave lectures in history, next worked for several government agencies. In 2001 he published the first detailed biography of Thomas Walter Scott, the first Prime Minister of Saskatchewan. 2004 followed a comprehensive collection of biographies of all Prime Minister of this province of the 20th century. On April 28, 2006, Prime Minister Stephen Harper the imminent appointment Barnharts for lieutenant governor known. Governor General Michaëlle Jean took on 1 August 2006 before the swearing.
