Hugh Edwin Munroe

Hugh Edwin Munroe ( born May 31, 1878 in Glengarry County, Ontario, † March 12, 1947 in Florida) was a Canadian politician. From 1931 to 1936 he was vice- governor of the province of Saskatchewan.

Biography

Munroe studied medicine at McGill University in Montreal. At the University of Edinburgh he pursued postgraduate studies. Later he moved to Saskatchewan and settled in the city of Saskatoon, where he opened a medical practice. In 1905 he took part as a candidate of the Conservative Party Provincial Rights to the first elections to the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan, but was not elected. Likewise, he was unsuccessful in his second attempt in 1912, this time for the Conservative Party of Saskatchewan.

During the First World War Munroe served as Lieutenant Colonel of the Medical Corps on the Western Front and was awarded the Order of the British Empire awarded for his services. After the war he resumed his medical practice in Saskatoon again. Governor General Lord Bessborough sworn Munroe on March 31, 1931 as Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan. The appointment came in some political circles, given the far-reaching effects of the global economic crisis on criticism. In the Legislative Assembly, a bill was introduced in 1934, with the Office of the Lieutenant Governor should be abolished, but clearly rejected. Munroe remained until September 9th, 1936 at the office.
