The Grand Tower Township is one of 16 townships in Jackson County in the southwest of the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2010, the Grand Tower Township had 707 inhabitants.
Geography
The Grand Tower Township lies at the mouth of the Big Muddy River in the Mississippi River, which forms the border with Missouri. The mouth of the Ohio at the intersection of the states of Illinois, Missouri and Kentucky is located around 100 km south.
The Grand Tower Township is located at 37 ° 38 ' N, 89 ° 28' W37.637222222222 - 89.473333333333 and extends over 86.48 km ², spread over 81.72 km ² of land and 4.764 km ² water surface. The township is bounded on the east by the Big Muddy River to its mouth.
The Grand Tower Township is located in the extreme southwest of Jackson County and is bordered to the west separated by the Mississippi River to the Perry County in Missouri as well as in the south and southeast by the Union County. Within the Jackson County Grand Tower Township is bordered on the northwest by the Fountain Bluff Township, on the north by the Sandridge Township and on the east by the Pomona Township.
Traffic
Through the Township runs along the Mississippi here the Illinois section of the Great River Road forming Illinois State Route 3 All other roads are County Roads or more subordinate and partly unpaved roadways.
Parallel to the Illinois State Route 3 runs a railway line of the Union Pacific Railroad.
With the Southern Illinois Airport of Grand Tower Township is located about 30 km northeast regional airports. The nearest major airport is the Lambert -Saint Louis International Airport ( some 175 km north-west ).
