Hammerstein

Hammerstein is a municipality in the district of Neuwied, in Rhineland -Palatinate. The community belongs to the municipality Bad Hönningen that has Hönningen its administrative headquarters in the city of Bath.

Geography

The municipality is located on the Middle Rhine on the right side of the river between the towns of Bad Hönningen and Neuwied in the Rhein-Westerwald Nature Park. It is divided into the districts of Upper Hammerstein in the south and low Hammerstein in the north. Hammerstein has the image of a village street village and extends along the axis of the fast rising valley of Hammersteiner Bach (low Hammerstein ) and the Federal Highway 42 (specifically Upper Hammerstein ). Between the two districts of Kerbergsbach flows into the Rhine. The highest point on the ground Hammerstein's is about 370 m above sea level. NN reaches to the southeast of the municipal territory. The entire eastern part of the commune's territory is uninhabited except for the Weierhof on the border of Neuwied.

Parish council

The local council in Hammerstein consists of eight council members, who were elected at the municipal election held on 7 June 2009, by majority vote, and the honorary mayor as chairman.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms description reads: " In red three slanted, 2:1 arranged silver hammers ".

The Three Hammers match the coat of arms of the former castle of Count Hammerstein, to whose territory the towns of Lower and Upper Hammerstein, now the town Hammerstein belonged. At the Kurtrierische red crest Silver Cross opposite the castle Count's coat of arms (red hammers in gold) reminds changed color. The community leads the coat of arms since 1946.

Culture and sights

  • Parish Church of St. George in Upper Hammerstein with origins dating back to the 10th century: the two bells (96 or 61 cm) were poured about 1050, making them the oldest bells in the Middle Rhine.
  • Burgmannshof ( tithe ) from the 16th century on the site where in 1176 a royal is attested in writing.
  • Built in the 10th century castle ruins Hammerstein is probably the oldest castle of the Middle Rhine Valley. In 1000 it was first mentioned as an imperial castle. 1125 the imperial insignia were kept there.
  • On the way from low Hammerstein to the castle there is an old Jewish cemetery.
  • Hammer Werth, the island ahead Hammerstein. It is often used by the locals in the summer beach.
