Hannu Kamppuri

Hannu Juhani Kamppuri ( born July 1, 1957 in Helsinki ) is a retired Finnish professional ice hockey goaltender who played in his playing days from 1973 to 1990 among others for the New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League and the Edmonton Oilers in the World Hockey Association.

Career

Hannu Kamppuri began his career as a hockey player in his hometown at Karhu -Kissat Helsinki, for the first team, he made his debut in the SM- sarja in the 1973/74 season. He then moved to the city neighbors Jokerit Helsinki. After a season in the A- juniors and another as a substitute goalie, he was able to quickly establish itself as goalkeeper in Jokerits professional team. In the 1977/ 78 and 1978/79 season he was selected in each case in the All-Star team of the SM- liiga, which had 1975 SM- sarja replaced as the highest Finnish league. His good performances did not go unnoticed in North America and the Finn was taken in March 1978 by the Edmonton Oilers under contract. After the season in Finland was completed, he went to Canada and got to the end of the 1978/79 season in two games for Edmonton in the World Hockey Association on the ice. The following year he played mainly for the Houston Apollos, for which he ran aground in 19 games in the Central Hockey League. In addition, he played three games for the Baltimore Clippers of the Eastern Hockey League.

In the summer of 1980 Kamppuri returned to his Finnish homeland and became the next four years, a performer at Tappara Tampere of the SM - liiga and the national team. With Tappara he was first in the 1980/81 season and Finnish runner-up for the seasons 1981/82 and 1983/84 Finnish champion. For him personally was the period from 1980 to 1984 with great success. During this time he was elected three more times in the All-Star team of the SM- liiga ( 1981, 1983 and 1984), received in each of the four years, the SM- liiga Lynces Academici Goalie Award and received three times the Urpo - Ylönen - trophy as the best goalkeeper in the SM- liiga (1981, 1982 and 1984). Then he received another opportunity to North America to change and received the 1984/85 season a contract with the New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League. For the defensively weak team he was in 13 games between the posts, of which, however, he got in an eleven Gegentorschnitt 5.02 goals per game. In the rest of the season, he also came for the Maine Mariners in the American Hockey League, and the Fort Wayne Komets of the International Hockey League action.

After a disappointing year across the Atlantic, Kammpuri returned a second time back to Finland. There he received a contract with Jokerit Lappeenranta for the 1985/86 season. There he was able to continue his old form and was first appointed to the national team after three years. From 1986 to 1988 he was at Kärpät Oulu in goal and was able to convince especially in the 1986/87 season, when he led his team surprisingly in the playoff finals. He received the SM- liiga Lynces Academici Goalie Award, the Urpo - Ylönen trophy for his services and was appointed to the All-Star team. Most recently, he played two years for the SM- liiga participants KooKoo. In the 1988/89 season he won the SM- liiga Lynces Academici Goalie Award for the last time. In addition, he was chosen by the magazine Ilta - Sanomat player of the year. Following the 1989/90 season, he finished his career at the age of 33 years. In 1998, he was honored as a total 115 players with induction into the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame.

Internationally

For Finland Kamppuri participated exclusively at the Junior World Championship in 1977 at junior level. In the senior level, he stood in his country's squad at the World Championships in 1981, 1982, 1983, 1986 and 1987. Overall, he played 25 games at A World Championships.
