Hattingen

Hattingen is the second largest city in the Ennepe -Ruhr -Kreis, in North Rhine -Westphalia. It is located in the southern part of the Ruhr area.

Geography

Hattingen was founded on a terrace of the Ruhr and has a well-preserved historic center with its numerous half-timbered houses. The center city is situated at an altitude 60-306 m above sea level.

The neighboring cities Hattingens are the cities of Bochum, Essen and Wuppertal Sprockhövel, Witten (both Ennepe -Ruhr-Kreis ) and Velbert ( Mettmann ). To the south is the so-called Elfringhauser Switzerland a popular recreation area.

Hattingen is divided into the districts of Blankenstein, Bredenscheid - Stüter, Hattingen -Mitte, Holthausen, Niederbonsfeld, Lower Elfring Hausen, Niederwenigern, Upper Elfring Hausen, Upper Stüter, Welper and Winz - Baak.

History

Hattingen is first mentioned in 990 as Reichshof Hatneggen. Its location between the Bergische Land with its metal products in the south and the Hellweg zone in the north with their textiles favored the trade. The 1396 with the Count Dietrich concluded by the Mark fixing agreement is now considered becoming a city of Hattingen. 1554 occurs Hattingen in the Hanseatic League.

As Ruhr city in the 19th and 20th century coal mining was very important. There were several mines in Hattingen. Already in 1787 were the Rauen Dahler rail, a rail line from Rauendahl in Hattingen Ruhr to put into operation. This was the world's first coal - transport railway.

About the neighboring cities Sprockhövel and Witten Highway 43 is reached.

Right through Hattingen runs the provincial road 651 ( December 31, 2009 Federal Road 51). This service operates from its terminal Hattingen middle of the tram line 308 of Bogestra to Bochum - Gerthe via Bochum Main Station.
