Heiko Westermann ( born August 14, 1983 in Alzenau ) is a German football player who has a contract with Hamburger SV Bundesliga side since the 2010/11 season. It is used mostly as a central defender, but can also play as full-back and defensive midfielder.

Career

Clubs

Beginnings in Fürth and Bielefeld

Westermann began his professional career in 2002 in the 2nd Bundesliga for SpVgg Greuther Fürth. There he soon became the starting player, before joining the 2005/06 season in the Bundesliga Arminia Bielefeld. Due to the injury to Petr Gabriel established himself from the beginning to the regulars. On 9th Round of the 2005/06 season he scored in the home game against Arminia Hertha BSC (3-0) his first Bundesliga goal.

FC Schalke 04 (2007-2010)

July 1, 2007 Westermann moved to FC Schalke 04 he signed a contract there until 30 June 2011. Already at the beginning of the season he played after an injury Mladen Krstajić multiple games at the position of central defender. Hamburger SV (since 2010)

During the summer break in 2010 Westermann moved to Hamburger SV. He signed a contract until 2015, replacing Jérôme Boateng. National

His debut for the German national team gave Heiko Westermann on 6 February 2008 in a 3-0 win in the Test match against the selection of Austria in Vienna. He belonged to the squad for Euro 2008 and became Vice-European Champion, but was not used. The first goal of his international career he scored 6 September 2008 in a 6-0 victory in the World Cup qualifier in Vaduz Liechtenstein to the selection.

On 6 May 2010 he was appointed by national coach Joachim Loew in the extended squad for the 2010 World Cup, but declined due to a barge broken leg, which he briefly in a friendly against Hungary (3-0 ) in front of a few weeks before the start of the World Cup the end of the had contracted game, not take part in the finals in South Africa.

Since May 2008, Westermann has one daughter; because of their birth, he missed the EM- up match against Belarus. In October 2010, the second daughter was born.
