The Heriot -Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland is one of three major universities of Edinburgh (next to University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Napier University) and emerged from the School of Arts of Edinburgh, founded in 1821, which began as a kind of technical university. Thus, the Heriot- Watt University is regarded as the world's first technical university at all. The university status it received in 1966. Originally located in the center of Edinburgh, there are now four campus areas. The main campus is located in the suburb of Riccarton Currie district on the southwestern outskirts of the city (20 minutes by car from the city center and 6 minutes from the airport) in the countryside, where the university gradually relocated since 1971. Offshoots are the Scottish Border Campus (formerly the Scottish College of Textiles) in Galashiels, the International Centre for Iceland Technologiy ( ICIT ) in Stromness in the Orkney Islands (as part of the Institute of Petroleum Technology) and since 2006 a subsidiary in Dubai ( Heriot- Watt University Dubai).

The University is named after the inventor of the steam engine James Watt and George Heriot, jeweler, philanthropist and banker of King James I (England) from the 16th century, named. The name of Watt came in 1852 in the name of the University, from 1885 he was " Heriot Watt College ". From 1869, women were admitted.

In 2006/7 the university had 7000 students in Scotland ( with a total distance learning courses or affiliated partner institutions 17700 ), of which a quarter were foreigners.
