Ice hockey at the 2006 Winter Olympics – Women's tournament

At the Olympic Winter Games 2006 Hockey Tournaments were held in Turin. For the third time after 1998 and 2002, there were in the Olympics with an ice hockey tournament for women.

Eleven out of 20 games the women were held in the hall Torino Palasport Olimpico, the other games right next door in the hall Torino Expositions.

The tournament was held with eight teams, of which the top four nations were set after the IIHF World Ranking after the Ice Hockey World Championship 2004 as well as the hosts Italy. The other three places were awarded in qualifying tournaments.

Qualification

Three places in the Olympic ice hockey tournament for women were purchased by means of qualifiers. The qualification should be carried out in three tournaments, each with 4 teams. Plan was open to teams ranked 5-16 of Hockey World Ranking (as on the A-WC 2004). However, since the 15th ranking North Korea and the 16 Denmark waived and the following teams only Slovenia was (26th ranking ) ready nachzurücken, found the qualifiers instead of just 11 teams. The three group winners qualifying tournaments were qualified for the Olympics.

Among the non-qualified nations, the International Ice Hockey Federation made ​​a ranking that went down in the IIHF World Ranking 2006.

Olympic Tournament

For the Olympic ice hockey tournament for women 8 teams, each with 20 outfield players and three goalkeepers were admitted. Directly qualified were the four best women's teams of the IIHF World Ranking (as on the Ice Hockey World Championship in 2004 ), ie Canada, the USA, Finland and Sweden, and the fifth team hosts Italy. The remaining three places were awarded in a qualification round where able to prevail in Russia, Germany and Switzerland.

In the preliminary round of the women's tournament, eight teams first played in two groups. The top two finishers in each group reach the semifinals, the third - and fourth-placed play in a placement round for places 5-8.

The preliminary matches took place generally without big surprises: The Canadians and U.S. Americans dominated their games and Finland, and Sweden presented the best teams behind the North Americans. In the semifinals, however, the Swedes managed the unexpected in advance: In Penalty Shoot- they defeated the heavily favored U.S. women and provided the first non- North American final at a major tournament.
