Independent Olympic Athletes at the 2012 Summer Olympics

As an independent Olympic participants took at the 2012 Olympic Games in London three athletes from Curacao ( former Netherlands Antilles ) and one from the South Sudan part.

The NOC of the Netherlands Antilles wanted to continue his work after the dissolution of overseas territory and its partial integration in the Netherlands in October 2010. But the IOC Executive Council withdrew the NOC during the 123rd IOC Session, which was held in Durban in July 2011, the membership as a stand-alone NOK there is no more legal basis. Athletes from the former overseas territory that qualified for the 2012 Olympics, were given the opportunity to compete as an independent Olympic participants.

In South Sudan, which gained independence in 2011, the IOC had recognized no organization as NOK before the Olympics and sports infrastructure was still in its infancy. Living in the United States Südsudanese Guor Marial therefore also launched as an independent Olympian and contest the marathon.
