Interstate 4

The Interstate 4 (abbreviated I-4 ) is a part of the interstate highway system in the United States. It runs exclusively in the state of Florida between the cities of Tampa and Daytona Beach.

This is the interstate highway with the smallest serial number, I-1 to I-3 are not awarded. The I- 4 runs, as all even-numbered Interstates, in east-west direction. On their entire course of the route also carries the hidden designation as Florida State Road 400 Just a 7 km long extension in the city of Daytona Beach is as SR 400 signs.

History

Interstate 4 is one of the first interstates, which were built in Florida. The first section was opened between Plant City and Lakeland 1959. In the years 1960/1961 the Howard Frankland Bridge was opened to Tampa. The entire section between Lakeland and Orlando was completed in 1962.
