Ismaïl Sghyr

Ismail Sghyr (Arabic اسماعيل صغير; born March 16, 1972 in Douar Ain Chaib at Ouled Teima, Taroudant Province ) is a French long-distance runner of Moroccan origin.

In 1988 he moved to Bordeaux. At the World Athletics Championships in Gothenburg in 1995, he was over 5000 meters and fourth in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta over the same distance eleventh. At the World Cross Country Championships in 1996 and 1997 respectively, he was eighth. Also in 1997 he won the bronze medal at the IAAF World Indoor Athletics Championships in Paris about 3000 m gold medal at the Mediterranean Games in the 10,000 m. At the World Championships in Athens, he was fourth in the 5000m. Two years later, he came at the World Championships in Seville in the 10,000 m at the 15th place and won in the Course de l' Escalade.

On 24 September of the same year he became a French citizen. In the 2000 Olympics he was missing because of the Moroccan Association refused him the release.

In 2001 he was now starting for France, about 5000 m in fifth at the World Championships in Edmonton, and the following year he won over the same distance silver at the European Championships in Munich.

In 2003 he was tenth respectively at the World Championships in Paris / Saint- Denis in the 10,000 m and the Amsterdam Marathon. The following year, he was eighth in the Paris Half Marathon, finished at the Olympic Games in Athens, ranked eighth in the 10,000 m and finished third at the Great North Run.

Also, he was third at the start of the following season at the Paris Half Marathon. In the Rotterdam Marathon, he came in 16th place and qualified for the marathon at the World Championships in Helsinki, where he plagued by cramps, but came only 55th position.

Ismail Sghyr is 1,68 m tall and weighs 50 kg. He was trained by Abdelkader Kada and launched initially for Stade Bordeaux, later for UA Gujan -Mestras.
