Jesus Nogueiras
José de Jesús Santiago Nogueira ( for short: Jesús Nogueira, born July 17, 1959 in Remedios, Villa Clara, Cuba) is a chess grandmaster.
In 1977 Nogueira was appointed International Master. In 1979 he was awarded the Grandmaster title. Since 2005, he additionally carries the title of FIDE Senior Trainer.
In 1985 he was Interzonal in Taxco at 10.5 from 15 games second behind Jan Timman and qualified for the Candidates Tournament Montpellier in 1985, where he scored 6 points from 15 games. In the Central American Zone Tournament 1987 in Bayamo, he was behind Armando Rodriquez and Alonso Zapata third parties together with Walter Arencibia and Guillermo García González. Counter Arencibia and Garcia himself Nogueira prevailed in a playoff. During the subsequent Zagreb Interzonal 1987, he scored 11.5 out of 24 games.
He has achieved many good results in international competitions. He won the Capablanca Memorial Tournament in Cienfuegos in 1984. 1986 he was split in Szirák behind Lew Psachis and József Pintér with Ian Rogers Third, Fourth and 1987 in Wijk aan Zee after Viktor Korchnoi, Nigel Short and Ulf Andersson. Its position on the world rankings allowed Nogueira participation in the Chess World Cup 1988/89. In 1991, he won jointly with Mikhail Tal and Julio Granda Miguel Najdorf the Memorial Tournament in Buenos Aires in 1997 and the open Carlos Torre Memorial tournament in Mérida.
Nogueira represented his country so far at 14 Chess Olympiads, in Malta 1980, Lucerne 1982, Thessaloniki 1984, Dubai 1986, Thessaloniki 1988, Novi Sad 1990, Moscow 1994, Yerevan 1996, Elista 1998, Istanbul 2000, Bled 2002, Calvia 2004, Turin 2006 Dresden 2008. He also participated in the World Team Championships in Lucerne 1989, 1993 and 1997, the Pan American Team Championships in Junín 1987 Guarapuava 1991 Cascavel 1995, Mérida 2000 and discharged in Mexico Under -26 World Team Championships in 1977 and 1980 in part.
Nogueira is known for its cautious, positional style and good opening knowledge. With White he plays mostly closed openings, while he strives with black leaves the French Defence, where he is an expert of Nimzowitsch / Winawer Variation.
