Jimmy Fitzmorris

James Edward "Jimmy" Fitzmorris, Jr. (* November 15, 1921 in New Orleans, Louisiana ) is a former American politician. Between 1972 and 1980 he was Deputy Governor of the State of Louisiana.

Career

Jimmy Fitzmorris graduated from Jesuit High School in New Orleans. In 1940 he began as a news boy for the rail company Kansas City Southern ( KCS) to work. Between 1942 and 1945, he served during World War II in the U.S. Army, where he rose to become major. He began studies at Loyola University, but which he did not finish. In 1946 he returned to KCS in which he ascended into the administration to Vice President. To date, he is one of the consultants of this company. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party. Between 1954 and 1966 he sat on the city council of New Orleans. In the years 1965 and 1969 he ran unsuccessfully for the office of the local mayor.

Fitzmorris was elected in 1971 on the side of Edwin Edwards as Vice Governor of Louisiana. This post he held for a re choice between 1972 and 1980. Yet he was assistant to the governor and to 1974 Chairman of the State Senate. After a constitutional reform in 1974, the personal union between the Lieutenant Governor and President of the Senate was abolished. Since then, the Senate shall elect its own president, regardless of the Lieutenant Governor. In 1979 Fitzmorris failed in the governor primaries of his party. Then he complained unsuccessfully against the outcome of this code. Four years later, in November 1983, he was defeated in the election for his old office of lieutenant governor. With his wife died in 1995, Gloria Lopez Fitzmorris he has a daughter.
