John Howard Pyle

John Howard Pyle ( born March 25, 1906 in Sheridan, Wyoming; † 29 November 1987 in Tempe, Arizona ) was an American politician ( Republican) and 1951-1955 Governor of the State of Arizona.

Early years

Pyle had an extensive career in broadcasting, starting with his radio report on the Japanese surrender during World War II to co-founding the national broadcaster Easter Sunrise Services at the Grand Canyon. He was married to Lucile Hanna, with whom he had two children together.

Governor of Arizona

Pyle was elected on November 7, 1950 to the Governor of Arizona and sworn in on 1 January 1951. He won his 1952 re-election. During his two terms of office of the Underground Water Commission was created, the Arizona Development Board established and adopted by the Civil Defense Act. Also, the Agreement on the Western Regional Cooperation regarding the higher education system has been approved. Furthermore signed U.S. President Harry S. Truman a repair to the Arizona Statehood Enabling Act, which ensured a long- term lease on Arizona land for the construction of natural gas pipelines. Pyle was unsuccessful in his third candidacy for the office and so he left it on January 3, 1955.

In the same year he joined President Eisenhower's staff in Washington in namely as Director of Federal- State Relations, a position which he held until 1959. Subsequently, he was then appointed President of the National Safety Council. He died on November 29, 1987 in Tempe, Arizona and was then buried in the Double Butte Cemetery.
