Ernest McFarland

Ernest William McFarland ( October 9, 1894 * near Earlsboro, Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma, † June 8, 1984 in Phoenix, Arizona ) was an American politician (Democratic Party). He was from 1941 to 1953 and U.S. Senator from 1955 to 1959 Governor of the State of Arizona.

Early years and political rise

McFarland attended from 1913 to 1914 the East Central Oklahoma Teachers College and in 1917 at the University of Oklahoma in Norman. During World War II he served in the United States Navy. After the war he moved to Phoenix, Arizona. There he was for a time as a clerk at a bank operates. Then he attended the Law Department at Stanford University in California, where he graduated in 1921. When he got his admission to the bar of Arizona, he practiced the first time in Casa Grande, Arizona.

He was also from 1923 to 1924 Deputy Attorney General of Arizona. After that, he was from 1925 to 1930 worked as a prosecutor in Pinal County and held finally from 1936 to 1940 a job as a judge at the Pinal County Superior Court

Senator and Governor

McFarland took office in Congress on January 3, 1941 as a Class 1 senator and successor of Henry F. Ashurst. In 1951 he was elected as Majority Leader and served in this position until 1952, when it struck the Republican Barry Goldwater in the Senate elections. He left office on January 3, 1953.

On November 2, 1954 McFarland was elected governor of Arizona, and sworn in on January 3, 1955. He was re-elected in 1956 for a second term. During his tenure, the state parks system was built, the Colorado River Boundary Commission established and expanded state aid for schools. Furthermore, the Interstate Oil Compact has been approved and the State Racing Commission announced the adjudicatory powers. He left his office on January 5, 1959.

After his time in the U.S. Senate McFarland was appointed in 1964 to the Arizona Supreme Court. He later served from 1968 to 1970 as Chief Justice. He was also the period 1968 to 1969 a member of the National Commission on the Causes and Prevention of Violence. He also was director of the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco, and president of the KTVK Arizona Television Company.

Ernest William McFarland died on June 8, 1984 and was interred in Greenwood Memorial Park in Phoenix. He was married to Edna Smith Eveland. The couple had a child together.

He received from the University of Arizona and Arizona State University each have a Doctor of Laws.
