John Wentworth Jr.

John Wentworth Jr. ( born July 17, 1745 in Somersworth, New Hampshire, † January 10, 1787 in Dover, New Hampshire ) was an American lawyer and politician. He was the son of Judge John Wentworth.

Career

John graduated in 1768 from Harvard University and then studied law. After qualifying as a lawyer, he moved to Dover (New Hampshire ), where he began practicing in 1771. His cousin, Governor John Wentworth, appointed him in 1773 to the executors of Strafford County, a position which he held until his death.

John decided to pursue a political career. He served in various revolutionary committees. On 10 January 1774, he was a member of the Committee of Correspondence. Then he worked from 1776 to 1780 in the House of Representatives from New Hampshire. He also was appointed in June 1777, the Committee of Safety. In addition, he served from 1777 to 1786 a job as a moderator ( city official ). In the years 1778 and 1779 he was a delegate to the Continental Congress where he signed the Articles of Confederation. Then he was from 1780 to 1784 a member of the State Council. He then worked until 1786 in the Senate of New Hampshire.

He died in 1787 in Dover, and was then buried in the Pine Hill Cemetery.
