Henry Marchant

Henry Marchant (* April 9, 1741 on Martha 's Vineyard, Massachusetts; † August 30, 1796 in Newport, Rhode Iceland ) was an American lawyer, judge and politician.

Career

Marchant attended school in Newport. He graduated in 1762 at the Philadelphia College (now University of Pennsylvania ). He then studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1767 and then practiced in Newport. He served from 1771 to 1777, the position of the Attorney General of Rhode Iceland. After that, he was from 1777 to 1779 as a delegate to the Continental Congress on. During this time he also signed the Articles of Confederation. In 1789 he was a delegate to the Rhode Iceland State Convention for the adoption of the U.S. Constitution. Then he worked from 1790 to 1796 as a judge at the Federal District Court for the District of Rhode Iceland. He died in 1796 in Newport and was buried in the Common Burial Ground.
