Josef Straßberger

Josef Straßberger ( born August 20, 1894 in Kolbenmoor, † October 10, 1950 in Munich) was a German weightlifter and Olympic champion in 1928 in the heavyweight division.

Career

Josef Straßberger grew up in Kolbenmoor. He came at a young age to Munich. At 20 he was drafted into military service and came there for the first time with " physical exercises" in touch. Therefore, he tried after discharge from the military service at TSV 1860 München in weightlifting. There rapidly the first successes came a.

The strength of Josef Straßberger was the beidarmige Press. In this exercise, the free unreacted weight must consist of the chest, without taking a swing or to lie in the cross, be pushed upwards. Josef Straßberger had each lost the foremost member due to an accident from the index and middle fingers of the right hand and, therefore, difficulties, the barbell to a tight fit at the high weights, which are lifted when beidarmigen thrusting. For this reason, his achievements in pushing beidarmigen were always slightly lower than that of its toughest rivals. Due to the fantastic for its time services beidarmigen Press Josef Straßberger could but mostly offset this disadvantage.

Already in 1919 occupied Josef Straßberger in the German Championship in weightlifting in Munich in the heavyweight division in the pentathlon with 502.5 kg 3rd place. That was the first time that he appeared in a German Championship in the winner list. He weighed then about 85 kg. For the first time he was in 1920 in Stuttgart German Masters in the pentathlon with 467.5 kg. He had this in the light heavyweight division, then to 82.5 kg of body weight, abtrainiert. In the same year he also became world champion in Vienna at light heavyweight with 415 kg in the pentathlon. From 1921 to 1933 Josef Straßberger then twelve times German champion in the heavyweight division. But he never weighed more than 100 kg it. In the period 1921-1933 he was beaten by Rudolf Schilberg from Vienna with a German Cup only in 1926. Austrian athletes were in the years 1922, 1926, 1930 and 1934 at the German championships that took place in these years as part of the so-called German fighting games, to start.

With his club, TSV 1860 Munich Josef Straßberger won between 1922 and 1934, plus ten times the German team championship.

His first success on the international stage lifter celebrated Josef Straßberger at the European Championships 1921 in Offenbach am Main. He won there in the heavyweight division of the Germans Fritz Wenninger and Adam King. This European Championship, which was attended by only a few nations, was intended as a replacement for the German weightlifters who were excluded from taking part in the Olympic Games in 1920 and 1924.

The next start of Josef Straßberger at an international championship then took place only at the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam since 1924-1928 no international championships were conducted in weightlifting. In Amsterdam Josef Straßberger won with 372.5 kg in the Olympic triathlon ( beidarmiges Press 122.5 kg, 107.5 kg and beidarmiges tearing beidarmiges bumping 142.5 kg ) with a large lead over Arnold Luhaäär from Estonia and Jaroslav Skobla from Czechoslovakia in heavyweight gold medal.

1929 found after many years in Vienna again European Championships in weightlifting instead. Josef Straßberger triumphed in the heavyweight division there and won with 372.5 kg before Rudolf Schilberg and Jaroslav Skobla. At the European Championships in 1930 in Munich and 1931 in Luxembourg Josef Straßberger ranked heavyweight each 3rd place, where he was but both times the second best Europeans, because in those years in the heavyweight won each of the Egyptians Sayed Nosseir. The Egyptians were allowed at that time, at the invitation of the European Weightlifting Federation at these European Championships.

Although already 38 years old, Josef Straßberger brought for the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles again in a very good shape. He achieved this in the Olympic triathlon with 377.5 kg outstanding results. This performance was enough but "only" for 3rd place behind the two Czechoslovaks Jaroslav Skobla, who scored 380 kg and Vaclav Psenicka, like Straßberger scored 377.5 kg, but was lighter than Straßberger. After the first two exercises (pressing and tearing) Josef Straßberger was still in the lead. However, he had to leave on or overtake in pushing for its above -mentioned handicaps of Skobla and Psenika without being able to even counter.

1933 found the European Championships held in Essen. It was after a long time a pentathlon advertised. Straßberger came here with 525 kg on the 3rd place behind the Czech Vaclav Becvar, who, because he was extremely strong in the one-armed exercises and beidarmigen pushing, with 552.5 kg before Arnold Luhaäär, who lifted 537.5 kg, won.

1934 launched Josef Straßberger 40 -year-old the last time at an international championship. He was represented at the 21 -year-old Josef Manger from Bamberg, the German colors in the heavyweight division at the European championship in Genoa. Josef Straßberger increased its services again and was charged with 382.5 kg in the Olympic triathlon again 3 winner. It won Vaclav Psenicka with 385 kg before Joseph Manger, with 382.5 kg of the same power as Straßberger scored, but was a little lighter than this. Incidentally, this was the last championship of Manger, in which he is not occupying the 1st place. In 1935 he was European champion, 1936 Olympic champion and 1937 and 1938 World Champion.

Josef Straßberger ceded in 1935 by international Heber stage. But this did not prevent him, nor establish two world records this year in beidarmigen Press with 135.5 kg and 136.5 kg. In total, he scored nine world records in his career.

Josef Straßberger the innkeeper in Munich was, after his playing days was a welcome guest at many national and international championships. The Olympic Village in Munich, a street was named after him. In Kolbenmoor stands at the sports ground of the local association, a memorial stone for him.
