Yury Vlasov

Yuri Petrovich Vlasov (Russian Юрий Петрович Власов; born December 5, 1935 in Makeyevka near Donetsk ) is a retired Soviet weightlifter.

Career

Yuri Vlasov was 1946-1953 cadet at the Suvorov Military School in Saratov, where he received a good general education sports ( boxing, swimmers, track and field, outdoor games ). Subsequently, he studied until 1959 at the Air Engineering Academy in Moscow. He graduated as an engineer from Lieutenant Colonel. In 1954 he received the Academy first contacts with the weight lifting and started so to lift weights themselves. His first coach was Bogdasarow p. His achievements were beginners at a bodyweight of 90 kg, 80 kg press, 75 kg in the snatch and 95 kg in the thrusting. In December 1955, he was already reached at 430 kg, and in the summer of 1957 at 462.5 kg in the Olympic triathlon. On the national stage he made in 1958 at the USSR Championships, where he placed 3rd in the heavyweight attention. From then on it went quickly uphill, because already in the next year he became world champion for the first time and a year later, in 1960, Olympic champions. Also in 1960, he was named by the Polish Press Agency Polska Agencja Prasowa (PAP ) to Europe's Sportsman of the Year.

Overall, his successful career lasted until 1964., He scored his best performance after the defeat at the Olympic Games in 1964 by Leonid Schabotinski on September 3, 1964 in Podolsk 580 kg. 1965 and 1966 he played no competitions.

In 1967, he attempted a comeback, but that did not succeed. He subsequently went back for good. Many years later he took to weight lifting in particular and sports in general, a detached attitude. He was active now with literature, wrote sketches, novellas and short stories. He was apparently very successful. According to journalist Curt Riess he said in an interview in the late 1960s, among other things with that more than 400,000 copies were sold of his book "Lighter moment."

In the 1990s, Vlasov was for several years active in politics: From 1989 to 1991 he was a People's Deputy of the USSR from 1993 to 1995 and State Duma deputy. He stepped strictly against the policy of reform Yeltsin. In 1996 he stood as a candidate in the presidential election, but received it only 0.2 % of the vote.
