Julia Grant

Julia Grant ( * January 16, 1826 near St. Louis, † December 14, 1902 in Washington, DC; native Julia Boggs Dent ) was the wife of Ulysses S. Grant and the First Lady of the United States of America from 1869 to 1877.

Julia Dent and Ulysses Grant got engaged 1844. At this time Grant was a lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Grant took two years later, part of the Mexican-American War. The couple married in 1848 after the war and had three sons and one daughter:

  • Frederick Dent Grant (1850-1912)
  • Ulysses Simpson Grant, Jr., known as "Buck" (1852-1929) - lawyer.
  • Ellen Wrenshall Grant, known as " Nellie " (1855-1922)
  • Jesse Root Grant (1858-1934) - engineer
