Junkers Ju 160

In the type of aircraft Junkers Ju 160 is a single-engine low-wing monoplane with a smooth metal hull.

It was designed as a fast passenger aircraft from the Junkers Ju 60 and launched its maiden flight on 30 January 1934. Overall, only 46 pieces ( mat.-no. 4202-4247 ) were built, even if the literature of 48 piece speaks.

When driving a 660 hp BMW 132A radial engine leis border was chosen. In addition to the two crew members, six passengers were transported.

The third prototype of the Ju 60 with the serial number 4202 was used as a prototype for the improved Junkers. These patterns machine got the registration D- Unor

In essence, the Ju 160 corresponded to your predecessor. Some crucial aerodynamic amendments provided, however, for a much better cruising speed. So now the wings were planked with smooth metal. They were also given a highly swept leading edge. All openings such as doors and windows as well as handles, rivets and kicks were mounted so that they ran flush with the outer skin.

Civilian use

As already ordered by Lufthansa Heinkel He 70 also reached the Ju 160 a top speed of 340 km / h Lufthansa put a total of 21 Ju 160, the V1 only as part of a trial from October 1934 to December 1935 flew as rich own aircraft at the DLH. Lufthansa bought in 1935 nine Ju 160 and eleven in 1936. They were employed mainly on secondary lines, as the passenger capacity for the main lines was too low. From 1935 to 1939 3.5 million kilometers were flown in regular service. The D- UVUX flew in the fourth quarter of 1935 as Eu XVI for Eurasia, but dropped out after a break and was returned for repair to the DLH. The Ju 160 was considered difficult to flying aircraft. 1936 to 1938 there were a total of four total losses. In three of these accidents lives were lost. When the war started, the aircraft were parked and released gradually to the Air Force. There they were scrapped in 1941.
