Junkers Ju 46

The Junkers Ju 46 was a single-engine, low-wing blank out seaplane from the German manufacturer Junkers. It served to accelerate the carriage of mail between Germany and the USA. The four of the five built aircraft were launched with the help of catapults of passenger ships. The delivery time of the post could be reduced by up to two days.

History

The Ju 46 was after excitation of the Deutsche Luft Hansa AG developed as a catapult- bootable version of the W 34. The first production model was delivered in 1932 and replaced the previously used Heinkel HE 12 and Heinkel HE 58

The primary purpose of this type was to speed up the postal service over the Atlantic Ocean. For this, the North German Lloyd had built on its express steamers Bremen and Europa compressed air catapults that could accelerate the Ju 46 with a takeoff weight of 3,200 kg with 20 m to about 110 km / h. The start of this aircraft was a special experience for the passengers of the steamer.

Construction

The Ju 46 was an all-metal aircraft with a closed two-seater cockpit. Compared with the W 34 the tail was enlarged to improve controllability at slow flight right after the catapult launch. The striking red signal color of the aircraft facilitated the rescue if the aircraft had to ditch once. The first two machines were equipped with a 9 - cylinder - equipped Pratt & Whitney Hornet radial engine with T2D1 600 hp ( 441 kW). The three later received BMW -132 Hornet -C with 635 hp ( 478 kW).
