Jyväskylä

Jyväskylä [ Jyväskylä ] is a city and a municipality located in Central Finland. With 133 448 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) is the seventh largest city in the country. Jyväskylä is located about 270 km north of Helsinki on the north shore of Lake Päijänne.

History

Jyväskylä was founded in 1837. Since 1966 she is a university town. Until 1997 Jyväskylä capital of the province of Central Finland, which merged with the administrative reform in 1997 in the province of Western Finland. However, Jyväskylä is also the capital of the reorganized landscape of Central Finland.

At the beginning of 2009, the City of Jyväskylä united with the rural municipality of Jyväskylä, at the same time the town was incorporated Korpilahti.

In Jyväskylä lived 2004 2.048 foreigners, unemployment in 2007 was 12.7%. About a quarter of the population are students. Since 27 September 2004 Markku Andersson mayor of the city.

At the beginning of 2009, the City of Jyväskylä united with the rural municipality of Jyväskylä, at the same time the town was incorporated Korpilahti. As a result, the surface Jyväskylä has increased more than tenfold, the population rose to around 128,000.

Attractions

The image of the city is dominated by the buildings of Alvar Aalto, among others, the police station, the university and the city museum designed. His work is dedicated to the Alvar Aalto Museum.

Just outside is the open air museum Savutuvan Apaja. On the gravel roads around Jyväskylä the Neste Oil Rally Finland is held annually (formerly 1000 Lakes Rally ), part of the World Rally Championship ( WRC) and practically the "Event of the Year".

The Aviation Museum of Central Finland ( Keski- Suomen Ilmailumuseo ) is located 18 kilometers north at Jyväskylä Airport in place Tikkakoski.

Boroughs

The center of Jyväskylä is located between the lake and the mountain ridge Jyväsjärvi Harju and consists of mostly parallel, towards the shore rather steep, arranged perpendicular streets with multi-storey residential and commercial buildings. The original wooden houses were usually replaced since the 1950s by concrete and stone buildings.

Important districts:

  • Kuokkala - opposite the city center on the southern bank of the Jyväsjärvi. In the 1990s, the development of the area started as a residential area with multi-story modern homes.
  • Mäki -Matti - mostly single-family homes embossed area north of the city center and Harju.
  • Kortepohja - mainly students settlement, northwest, about 2 km from the center
  • Kypärämäki - mainly detached and terraced houses, the western edge of the city
  • Tourula - residential and commercial properties to the east of the city on the river Tourujoki
  • Lohikoski - mainly detached and terraced houses, peninsula in the north of the city
  • Nenäinniemi - development area, mainly detached and terraced houses, peninsula in the south of the city by the lake Päijänne
  • Keltinmäki - housing estate on the outskirts, Southwest
  • Myllyjärvi - mostly single-family houses and halls of residence on the outskirts, Southwest
  • Huhtasuo - housing estate on the outskirts, east
  • Keljonkangas - primarily industrial area, in the southwest
  • Seppälä - primarily industrial area, in the east
  • Säynätsalo - situated on the homonymous island in Päijänne district

Economy

The city is an important industrial center. It is the site of paper, wood and metal industries. Even a factory of popular candy company Panda is located on the outskirts of the city.

Management

The strongest political force in Jyväskylä, the Social Democrats, who represent 17 of 67 seats in the city council, followed by the two other Finnish political parties, the Conservative-Liberal National Coalition Party and the Centre Party with 13 of 11 seats. Furthermore, represented in the City Council are the right-wing populist base fins with eight, the Green waistband with seven, the Left Alliance with six, the Christian with four and finally the Communist Party of Finland with the mandate.
