Karl Lehmann

Cardinal Karl Lehmann ( born May 16, 1936 in Sigmaringen ) is since 1983 the Bishop of Mainz. From 1987 to 2008 he was chairman of the German Bishops' Conference. Lehmann was appointed by Pope John Paul II Cardinal 2001.

Life

Studies, ordination, Chair

Karl Lehmann was born in Sigmaringen and spent his childhood in Veringenstadt, where his father Karl Lehmann was a primary school teacher. The mother Margaret was trained as bookseller. His Elementary School, 1942 to 1945, he spent at the elementary school Liggersdorf. Bishop and cardinal

On June 3, 1983 Lehmann was elected by the chapter of Mainz as bishop and as a result, on 23 June 1983 by Pope John Paul II appointed Bishop of Mainz. He received his episcopal consecration his predecessor, Cardinal Hermann people, on 2 October of the same year in the Mainz Cathedral; Co-consecrators were Wolfgang Rolly, Auxiliary Bishop of Mainz, and Oskar Saier, Archbishop of Freiburg. His term of office is the fourth longest in the history of the diocese of Mainz. Only Albrecht of Brandenburg, Lothar Franz von Schönborn and Willigis were longer in office.

Academic: Karl Lehmann is Honorary Professor at the Universities of Mainz and Freiburg He became the Dr. phil. and Dr. theol. doctorate and is the recipient of numerous honorary doctorates (see below). The title of Cardinal replaced all worldly name resolutions so that they are not mentioned specifically, when " Cardinal " appears before the name.

Blazon: Shared and split up, up front, the Wheel of Mainz and back in black with a silver slant specified key with the beard according to heraldic right ( coat of arms of the former diocese of Worms), accompanied by six golden cross. In the lower golden shield the whipped red Bible with the Greek letters A and Ω. About the coat of arms of the red cardinal's hat ( Galero ) with 15 red tassels hanging down ( sign of the dignity of Cardinal ). Behind the shield the episcopal processional cross as a reference to the Bishop of Mainz.

Karl Lehmann was in 1987 and chairman of the German Bishops' Conference ( DBK ). From 1985 to 1987 he was Vice-Chairman in Joseph Hoffner, and after his illness and his resignation from the office also acting director until his first election as President on 22 September 1987. In a letter to the members of the Episcopal Conference, he announced his resignation from the chair of the German Bishops' Conference for health reasons as of February 18, 2008. Hessian Culture Award

2009 Lehmann was provided with representatives of other religions for the Hessian Culture Award. Lehmann refused together with Peter Steinacker simultaneous Awarded to Navid Kermani because of its expressions to the Christian cross, which is why the awards ceremony was postponed. This triggered an extensive media coverage, in the attitude of Lehmann and Steinacker's often met with opposition. Ultimately, Lehmann and Steinacker decided after a meeting with Kermani but to the common acceptance of the prize, which was eventually awarded grain on 26 November 2009 to the four winners Lehmann, Steinacker, Kermani and Salomon.
