Kaštela

Kastela [ kaʃtɛla ] is a city in Croatia with 38 667 inhabitants ( 2011 census ).

The city is situated on the coast of Central Dalmatia between Split and Trogir. In the 15th and 16th centuries, 13 forts were built along the 16 km long coastal strip, which should be used to prevent attacks of the Turks. These forts originated during the time places that today form the city of Kastela and gave it the name.

Seven of the 13 castles still remain: Kastel Stafilic, Kastel Novi, Kastel Stari, Kastel Luksic, Kastel Luksic, Kastel Gomilica Kastel Sućurac

The coast is climatically protected by the Kozjak Mountains. In the hinterland of the settlements there are many fields where fruit, olives, wine, and vegetables are grown. In addition, Kastela is a tourist center and a popular destination for the inhabitants of Split. Also, here is the international airport of Split.

Kastel Štafilić

Kastel Štafilić is the westernmost and Trogir closest district. It has 3,042 inhabitants (as of 2011) and is 17.5 km from Split. The name goes back to Stjepan Štafileo of Trogir, who built the castle with fortified tower.

Kastel Novi

The name of Kastel Novi ( "New castle"), goes back to the construction of the massive, free-standing Cippico / Ćipiko tower 35 years after the construction of the Kastel Stari ( " Old Castle ").

Kastel Novi has 6,411 inhabitants (as of 2011). It is the second Kastel from Trogir and 17 km from Split.

Kastel Stari

Kastel Stari has 7,052 inhabitants (as of 2011) and is about 16 km away from Split on the railroad Knin - Split.

Train Crash in 2009

Near the train station Kastel Stari derailed on July 24, 2009, the ICN 521, a tilting train, in a tight corner at excessive speed. Six dead and 40 injured were the result. Kastel Gomilica has 4,881 inhabitants (as of 2011). Here Benedictines built from Split in the 12th century Romanesque church of Sv. Kozma i Damjan. The fort was built early 16th century on an exposed rock and was connected by a drawbridge to the mainland.

Kastel Sućurac

Kastel Sućurac is the closest to Split area and has 6,829 inhabitants (as of 2011). The fort Sućurac is the oldest and best preserved. The first tower was built in 1392, expanded the facility several times later.
