The Kentucky Speedway is a 1.5 -mile oval race track north of central Kentucky near Sparta, about halfway between Louisville and Cincinnati. It was designed so that Cup races can be held on it NASCAR Sprint. Sometimes took place race NASCAR Nationwide Series and Craftsman Truck Series and the IndyCar Series and Firestone Indy Lights. Sometimes NASCAR has denied any discussion about a race of the Sprint Cup.

In July 2005, the Kentucky Speedway NASCAR and the International Speedway Corporation sued because they do not allow it to bid for NASCAR racing, if the venue meets the prerequisites for this. The lawsuit came only a year after the so-called Ferko process, after which the prestigious Southern 500 at Darlington in favor of a second race at Texas Motor Speedway had to be abandoned. The organizers of the Kentucky Speedway perform this ruling as precedent. Although NASCAR has asked for a transfer of jurisdiction to Florida, this request was not granted. On 7 January 2008 the case was dismissed.

In response to the complaint about 40,000 signatures were collected collected to end the lawsuit with a settlement. The background to this petition were a concern that a successful action to increase the ticket prices and smaller racetracks could lose their race.

There were also rumors that the owner of Kentucky Speedway could possibly buy the Pocono Raceway to get as one of the races from there to Kentucky. However, had the Mattioli family, belonging to the said circuit, this project rejected that.

In the meantime, the track has become a popular course for test drives the Sprint Cup race car after NASCAR in 2005 adopted a restrictive test ban. After that, the teams are allowed to test only a total of seven specific and authorized by NASCAR race tracks. As in Kentucky no Sprint Cup event takes place, individual tests are allowed without restrictions.

Since 2011, there is now a Sprint Cup race of the season at this track.
