Khövsgöl Province

The Chöwsgöl Aimag (also Khuvsgul or Khövsgöl, Mongolian Хөвсгөл Аймаг ) is an aimag ( province ) of Mongolia. It lies on the north by the Russian border, and contains the northernmost point in the country. Administrative center of the area is Moron. Until 1933 Chatgal was the capital.

The name derives from the lake Chöwsgöl Nuur, which together with its environment has the status of a national park in Mongolia since 1992. Around the lake and north of Chöwsgöl Nuur are the largest forests of Mongolia. They are a continuation of the South Siberian taiga. The Chöwsgöl Nuur is also referred to as a "small Baikal ( Lake) ".

Traffic

The airport of Moron ( ZMMN / MXV ) has a paved runway. He has frequent flights to and from Ulan Bator and also serves as a stopover for some of the western aimags.

The airport of Chatgal (HTM) is operated only in the summer with scheduled flights to and from Ulan Bator, and serves as the tourist development of the Chöwsgöl Lake.

The Chöwsgöl province is visited quite a lot of tourists because of the very scenic Lake Chöwsgöl Nuur.

Other attractions in the provincial capital of Moron, the fifth largest with around 37 000 inhabitants city of Mongolia, among, inter alia, the monastery Dandsandardschaa Chiid.
