Geography

Geographical Location

Kirchheim am Ries is on the edge of the eastern Swabian Alb, on the western edge of the Nordlinger Ries in the Geopark Ries, at the foot of Mount Blasi.

Neighboring communities

The municipality is bordered to the north by Unterschneidheim, to the east by Wallerstein in the Bavarian district of Donau -Ries, on the southeast by Riesbürg and to the south and west by the city Bopfingen.

Community structure

At the village of Kirchheim am Ries with the formerly independent communities Benz rooms and Dirgenheim include nine villages, hamlets and farms. For the former municipality Benz rooms feature the village Benz rooms. For the former municipality Dirgenheim the village Dirgenheim and the homestead Kreuthof and dialed villages Stolzenberg and the " include the Burg of the local nobility ," which probably was within Dirgenheims. At the village of Kirchheim am Ries in the area as of December 31, 1971 include the village of Kirchheim am Ries, the hamlet Jagstheim and Easter Wood and the courts Heerhof, lime kiln and mill pond and the disposed villages Goldbach and brick cottage.

History

On the western edge of the village is a alamannisches burial ground. It is after the excavation results 1962-1964 of a large main building and a smaller side cemetery as well as a clearly contrasting nobility burial ground. It 518 graves with at least 570 burials were found. While the dead were buried in the rule in simple earth graves on the main burial ground, were found in Adel Cemetery large wooden chambers. The cemetery was occupied since the mid-6th to the 8th century. Towards the end of the 7th century of separate cemetery was founded, with the majority of these originally ostentatious tombs have been robbed early.

  • Every two years in the district Dirgenheim Passion Play at St. George church. The next games will be held in 2013.
