Kotovo, Volgograd Oblast

Kotowo (Russian Котово ) is a town with 24 115 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in Russia and the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons in the Volgograd Oblast. The town lies on the River ( Small ) Kasanka in the river system of the Don, 229 kilometers north of the regional center of Volgograd.

History

The place was built in the 1710s - years with the founding of a village at the Kasanka. The village name comes from the surname of the first local settler, a Ukrainian named Kotenko, from. In 1791 a stone church was first built in Kotowo, namely the until now standing Archangel Michael Church. Towards the end of the 19th century the place already counted nearly 3,000 souls, of whom it was farmers at most. 1912-1913 a water pipeline was laid in Kotowo that works to this day as such.

Beginning of the 20th century, oil fields were developed near the town, which the population Kotowos allowed to rise. Since 1966 Kotowo has the status of a city.

Economy

The main industry of the city is still the extraction and processing of crude oil, there is also Kotowo in a brickyard, a reinforced concrete factory and a number of smaller industrial companies. In the surrounding area also farming is done.

Attractions

The oldest surviving structure Kotowos is the Archangel Church (1791 ), also a few historical buildings have been preserved from the 19th century, including the former county administration building ( 1864).
