Kurisu is a village (Estonian küla ) in the rural community Kõrgessaare ( Kõrgessaare vald ). It is the second largest Estonian island of Hiiumaa ( German Dagö ).
Description
Kurisu ( German Kurisoo ) has 23 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011). The place was first mentioned in documents in 1612. It is located 13 kilometers southwest of the island's capital Kärdla ( Kertel ).
Kurisu is located in a karst area. The village got its name from the eponymous Estonian word for sinkhole. The sinkhole, which Kurisu neeluauk lies north-east of the village center on the edge of a forest area. The funnel has a diameter of 32 m and tapers down to 12 m. It is usually filled with water; only in high summer you can see the sinkhole. There also the Bach Kurisu oja flows.
