History

The place Lagosanto originated in the 10th century over an initially very narrow strip of land between the lagoons of Comacchio ( Valli di Comacchio ) and those of Volano ( Valli di Volano ). In the strip of land there was a small lake (Lago ) on which the cenobite San Appiano lived. This was the reason for the choice of the name Lagosanto (Holy See).

As a result of draining campaigns in the lagoons of Comacchio and Volano in the 19th and 20th centuries gave the water of the lagoons back and they shrank in their surface expansion by about 50% (the comprehensive originally 18,000 acres of lagoons of Comacchio today have an extent of only approximately 9,000 acres ). Thus, the usable land mass grew quite considerably to around the town. With the newly acquired agricultural land was also the economic recovery. In addition to various crops, grapes are harvested in the region that are pressed to make the cuvée Bosco Eliceo. The place was a long time dispute between Comacchio and Ferrara.

Lagosanto is now a modern housing estate and has a large, modern hospital.
