History
Lauterhofen is located on an ancient trade route that led northward from the Danube to the Main about Forchheim and beyond through the Thuringian Forest in central Germany. In the 1960s, graves were discovered from the 7th century, which document an early settlement. In general, the tombs of the late 7th and early 8th century have been associated with bajuwarischer settlement activity, with recent settlement history research assess an ethnic designation ( Bavarians / Franken? ) Reserved, as was the case in recent decades. As part of the Frankish expansion a Frankish ( Carolingian ) Royal Court in the district was probably set up in the corner on the eastern edge of Lauterhofen no later than the middle of the 8th century. 806 the village was first mentioned in the known as divisions regnorum Chapter Members of Charlemagne to the division of the kingdom as a villa Lutrahahof. The place was then in 1100 in the possession of the Lords of Habsberg - Kastl and the Counts of Sulzbach and came by way of gift to the Monastery Kastl and finally to Bavaria. On the eastern edge of the present village was in the late Middle Ages and the Late Middle Ages the castle Oberlauter Mayrhofen, since 1307 owned by the sheriffs, 1307-1487, it was the stone Linger.
Incorporations
On 1 July 1972, the until then independent municipality Pettenhofen and parts of the disbanded community Brunn were incorporated. Deinschwang, Engelberg, Gebert Mayrhofen, Traun field and Trautmannshofen were added on 1 May 1978.

Coat of arms
Blazon: Argent, on a green hill two supplied turned, red crowned golden lion holding a diagonally placed red crenellated tower with pointed roof, which is manned up with bay windows and covered on foot with the pound sign.
The coat of arms has been known since the 15th century.

Structures
- The town hall dates from 1593
- In the district Trautmannshofen is the Sanctuary of the Virgin name. It was built in 1691 to designs by the architect Leonhard Dietzenhofer. The church tower and the defensive wall surrounding it are still medieval in origin
- The parish church of St. Michael was built in 1100 as a proprietary church of Count Berengar of Sulzbach, possibly at the site of an older church. The tower can still brickwork of the time it was built to recognize
- To the east of the town are in the area of the residential building Lampertistraße 1, corner Martin road, the remains of the church of St. Martin of the Carolingian royal court ( church largely departed )
