León Airport (Spanish: Aeropuerto de León ) is a regional airport in León in northwestern Spain. The airport also serves as a military airfield by the Spanish Air Force, which designates the facility as Aeródromo Militar de León.

History

In March 1920, the construction of the airfield Leon is announced by Ministerial Decision. It was originally designed for a purely military use, as a way station for the route Asturias -Madrid. As early as 1929 the military airport was provisionally authorized to provide commercial air navigation services available.

During the Spanish Civil War the airfield was the headquarters of several Air Force units of the army and their supporting German Condor Legion. Part of the German fighter squadron flew already in October 1936, even before the formation of the actual Condor Legion, inserts of La Virgen del Camino. In November 1936 here the first season of the hunt group was set up 88 ( 1.J/88 ) and from September 1937 the square served as a logistics and maintenance base for the Germans after the operating companies aircraft group and outdoor parking ( P/88 ) to Virgen del Camino had been laid. The official adoption of the Legion Condor by guiding the Ejercito del Aire took place on this airfield on 22 May 1939.

After the war he was classified in class A. In the 1940s, a flying school was set up, which was converted after a few years the training center of the Air Force Special Forces.

1964 Leon Airport was opened to commercial air traffic. It created the opportunity to land on two sides. The aeronautical limitations were published in 1967 and remained unmodified until 1988. 1990 decided the regional administrations for it to sponsor an airport infrastructure project that would promote aviation in the province. The permission of the civilian use was granted in 1991 by the Spanish Ministry of Defense.

A native of Leon Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero announced in 2007, the third expansion of the airfield with the start of construction in 2008. This includes an interim unfinished new terminal, 300 car parking spaces and an extension of aircraft hangars with a total investment of 22.3 million euros.

Airlines and destinations

Leon is currently mainly operated by Air Nostrum on behalf of Iberia with scheduled flights. Its objectives include Madrid and Valencia.
