Lermontov, Russia

Lermontov (Russian Лермонтов ) is a town with 22,541 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in the Russian region of Stavropol, Federal District Southern Federal District.

Location

The city is located in the Caucasus foothills in the southern part of the Stavropol region, surrounded by the countryside of the Caucasian mineral waters. The distance to the capital city of Stavropol region is almost 200 kilometers. In the vicinity of Lermontov are the spa towns Zheleznovodsk, Pyatigorsk and Jessentuki as well as the urban-type settlement Inosemzewo.

History

The city was founded in 1953 and was originally a housing estate, which belonged to a nearby undeveloped deposits of uranium ore. Despite the proximity of the place to the spa towns of the North Caucasus and its mineral water springs it does not apply itself as a spa.

In 1956 the settlement of the city status and name Lermontovsky, which was changed to its present name Lermontov 1967. This was chosen in honor of the poet Mikhail Lermontov, who had spent a long time in this area and in 1841 was killed in the nearby Pyatigorsk.

Economy and Transport

Today Lermontov is considered an important industrial center of the southern Stavropol region, including with companies in the microelectronics, electromechanical and light industry. In total there are in the city about 150 different companies.

Along with the neighboring cities Lermontov is connected to the car highway M29. Also, it has a regional station with connection to the North Caucasian railway network. The nearest commercial airport is located around 20 km away in Mineralnye Vody.
