Liebenscheid

Liebenscheid is a municipality in the Westerwald district in Rhineland- Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality Rennerod.

Geography

The community lies in the Westerwald between Siegen and Limburg, on the border with North Rhine -Westphalia and Hesse.

The three districts of the municipality are Liebenscheid, White Mountain and Löhnfeld.

History

Liebenscheid was first mentioned in a treaty of partition between the sons of Count Henry I of Nassau- Dillenburg on June 18, 1341. Henry I of Nassau- Beilstein received Liebenscheid among other possessions. During this time the castle Liebenscheid was created, which was later expanded.

In the year 1360 was given city rights by Emperor Charles IV Liebenscheid together with the neighboring village of White Mountain, the Emperor promised the two places have the same rights as those of the imperial city of Wetzlar. 1452 donated the Beilsteiner Count the Mainz Cathedral Provost Heinrich a chapel.

In the prison of the castle Liebenscheid the father of Peter Paul Rubens Jan Rubens, was detained because he was in a close relationship with Anna, the wife of Count William I of Orange -Nassau.

On April 1, 1969, the formerly independent communities Löhnfeld and Weissenberg were incorporated.

The local council in Liebenscheid consists of twelve council members, who were elected at the municipal election held on 7 June 2009 by majority vote, and the honorary mayor as chairman.
