London Borough of Richmond upon Thames

London Borough of Richmond upon Thames [ ɹɪtʃmənd ə ˌ pɒn tɛmz ] is a municipality in the south-west of London. He is the only one that lies on both sides of the Thames. With the establishment of the administrative region of Greater London in 1965, he emerged from the Municipal Borough of Twickenham in the County of Middlesex and the Municipal Borough of Richmond and the Municipal Borough of Barnes, Surrey.

The population continued in 2008, composed of 87.9 % White, 5.1 % Asian, 1.9% black and 0.9 % Chinese.

Description

The municipality is not fully urbanized. There are several open areas, especially Richmond Park and the Royal Botanic Gardens. Main settlements are Twickenham, St Margarets and Whitton in the West, Hampton and Teddington in the south and the metropolitan area, Richmond - Kew - Mortlake - Barnes in the east. The village-like atmosphere and several train and underground links to London make them preferred commuter towns.

Richmond, the center of this district, was originally called Sheane or Sheen. After Henry VII the spent Sheen Palace in 1502 was rebuild, has been renamed the city and palace after his beloved castle in Richmond (North Yorkshire ). Only the gatehouse and some outbuildings of Richmond Palace still exist. The old name is still to be found: The area east of Richmond is still called East Sheen, a railway station in the East Richmond called North Sheen.

The area is home to the German School London and the Swedish School London, which has the consequence that the majority of people living in London Germans and Swedes live in the surrounding areas. Richmond is one of the most affluent districts of London. Constance and Fontainebleau are sister cities since 1983.

The most famous attractions are Hampton Court Palace, Ham House, Strawberry Hill, Richmond Park and the Royal Botanic Gardens ( Kew Gardens ). In Kew is also the Public Record Office, the British State Archives.

The district Twickenham is the center of the English Rugby Union: in Twickenham Stadium, which is home to the Rugby Football Union simultaneously, which makes the English national team. Just a few hundred meters away is The Stoop stadium, home of Harlequin FC and Harlequin Rugby League.
