Lugari District

Lugari District is a district in the Kenyan province of Western. The capital of the district is Lugari. Until 1998, the area belonged to the Kakamega District.

Structure

The Lugari District is divided into three divisions, ten venues, and 28 sub- locations.

Economy

In Lugari District 90 % of the population engaged in agriculture work. Mainly maize, beans, millet, tobacco, coffee beans and cotton are grown. In 2000, 57 % of the population lived in Lugari District below the poverty line.

Health service

The district has 51 health care facilities, which aim primarily malaria, skin diseases, diarrhea and respiratory infections are treated. The infant mortality rate is 1.3%, 1.84 % of children die before reaching their fifth birthday. 10-19 % of the total population in Lugari District are HIV positive or suffering from AIDS. Many children under five are malnourished, maternal mortality is high.
