Luis Fortuño

Luis Guillermo Fortuño Burset ( born October 31, 1960 in San Juan ) is a Puerto Rican politician. He represented Puerto Rico from 2005 to 2009 as a delegate in the U.S. House of Representatives and was from 2 January 2009 to 2 January 2013, the governor of the U.S. State area. Fortuño is a member of the Partido Nuevo Progresista and is close to the Republicans.

Fortuño studied at Georgetown University and the University of Virginia. In 2004, he joined the PNP for election as Resident Commissioner. Aníbal Acevedo Vilá, who had held the post until then, 2004 was nominated by his party for the office of governor, so that Roberto Prats ran for the U.S. Democrats related Partido Popular Democrático for the office of Resident Commissioner. However, Fortuño was able to prevail against his opponent. He represented Puerto Rico in order from the 3rd January 2005 at the U.S. House of Representatives.

In November 2008, Fortuño ran against incumbent Acevedo Vilá for the post of governor. He won with 52.8 percent of the vote and took office in early 2009. In 2011, he authorized the referendum on the status of Puerto Rico, 2012.
