Maçanet de Cabrenys

Maçanet de Cabrenys is a Spanish municipality in the comarca of Alt Empordà in Catalonia.

Geography

Maçanet de Cabrenys lies at the foot of the eastern spur of the Pyrenees. The rivers Arnera and Rinadal, like the GR -11 trekking path which cross the region. In the south and southeast it borders the municipalities of Sant Llorenç de la Albanyà and Muga, in the east by the municipalities of La Vajol and Darnius and to the north by Costoja, Sant Llorenç de Cerdans, Reiners, Els Banys d' Arles, PALALDA, Ceret, Morella and Les Illes.

Demographics

History

In the last century Neolithic axes were found near the Arnera River, and the Menhir de la Pedra Dreta (, Menhir of the standing stone '). They show that the Arnera Valley was inhabited since prehistoric times. The first written mention of the name Maçanet was found in a document of King Louis the Pious from the year 814, in which it was written that Maçanet located south of Ceret - " quae dicitur Villam Macanetum ".

In the year 954 Landgraf Guifré II of Besalu donated to the monastery of Sant Pere de Camprodon a piece of land that belonged to the village community Tapis to where the church of Mare de Deu de les Salines ( Church of Our Lady of the salt mines ') to build. In 1440 de Cabrenys has been added to the place name Maçanet because this church belonged to the county Cabrenys. The Cabrenys descended from the influential family Rocabertí. 1553 was half the population of the black plague victim. In July 1675 Lieutenant-General Le Bret in 1500 soldiers plundered the place.

Economy

Originally there were in the town next to some traditional farming enterprises in the textile and iron industries and Flaschenkorkfabriken and a large pipe factory. Today the main income of the community is achieved by tourism and the construction industry. From the Font de les Creus (, source of Crosses ') is spring water bottled mineral water which belongs to the group Vichy Catalán.

Monuments

Església de Sant Martí

The Església de Sant Martí ( St. Martin), from the 12th or 13th century, belongs to the late Romanesque art. It consists of a single rectangular hall with an arched vaults and a semicircular apse. The entrance consists of four stone arches that form a semi-circle. The entrance itself is decorated in wood and iron figures from the medieval period.

Capella de Sant Sebastià

The Capella de sant Sebastià ( Chapel of Saint Sebastian ') was built in the late 16th century after the outbreak of the black plague. In the 18th century the chapel was renovated.

Sanctuary of Les Salines

The Sanctuary de la Mare de Deu de les Salines (, Shrine of Our Lady of the salt mines ') is below a 1100 meters high mountain peak that bears the same name. The Sanctuary is located 15 kilometers from the city, it was built in 1271 and renovated in the 18th century.

The hammer of the Roland

In 1834 was right in the middle of the church square of the so-called " Hammer of Roland", the Carolingian knight, immortalized. There is a massive more than five meters hoger iron rod. The located at the top fluid control ring formerly served as bulb holder. The hammer of the Roland was produced in an old iron foundry near the Arnera river. A legend says that the hammer of Roland himself was thrown down from the bridge in Ceret. Another legend, Roland would have thrown the hammer and told from the castle Cabrenys in Vallespir: " Where the hammer falls, there is Maçanet of Cabrenys arise ".

The standing stone

The standing stone is a menhir, the (, The standing stone ') is called by the inhabitants of La Pedra dreta. It is located two kilometers from the village.

Tapis

Tapis is a small village that belongs to the municipality Maçanet de Cabrenys. The name Tapis was first mentioned in 954 in a recording. In 2005 the village had only 25 inhabitants.

Sant BRIC

The Church of Saint BRIC in Tapis was built in the late 12th or early 13th century. At the end of the internal church hall are two small chapels that make up the large hall with a cross. The altar area at the hall end is connected by an almond-shaped double bow. The narrow arches, the proportions, the style and structure of the final column ends of the entrance gate are typical identifying features of the final stage of Romanesque art in Catalonia.

Fixed

On the first Sunday in July, the local festival of Maçanet de Cabrenys and is celebrated on November 11, the feast of the St. Martin of Tours, the patron saint of the church.
