Madrid- Torrejon (Spanish: Aeropuerto Madrid- Torrejón ) is an airport located in the Spanish town of Torrejón de Henares, about 22 kilometers northeast of Madrid. The airport is used as a base Aérea de Torrejón de Henares by the Spanish Air Force.
History
Between 1957 and 1992, was the military airfield, next Moron and Zaragoza, as one of three bases, the base of operations of several units of the U.S. Air Force, first strategic bombers of SAC and after 1966 interceptor USAFE, among other things, was here for years the 401st Tactical Fighter Wing. Here was also the headquarters of the 16th Air Force, which supervises all USAF units in Spain.
In addition, equipped with F- 86F 61 Spanish fighter squadron ( Escuadrón número de Caza 61) was stationed here from May 1959, the 1964 were added more units. The Spanish Air Force came in April 1965 led to a reorganization, whereby instead of the 61st Fighter Squadron, the 161st squadron as part of the 16th Squadron ( Ala 16 ) occurred, which flew the F- 104G Starfighter. The F -86, however, were still being used on two other squadrons until 1967 and 1971 respectively on. With the introduction of the F- 4C Phantom II in the spring of 1971, the 16th Squadron in Ala 12 has been renamed. The Ala 12 operation from October 1978, the reconnaissance variant of RF -4C Phantom and 1989/ 1990, the conversion of the F -4C on the F/A-18. The RF -4C squadron ( Escuadrón 123 ) was decommissioned in 2002.
The still visible infrastructure ( typical layout of a U.S. bomber base with a large concrete apron, numerous hangars, barrack -like accommodation area with PX Store, hangar for alarm rotting, ammunition bunkers ) still bears witness of the originally purely military use, which lasted until 1996.
Military use
The base currently houses (2012 ) the following flying units of the Spanish Air Force:
- Ala 12 (12th Wing ) with two squadrons of tactical multi-role combat aircraft EF -18A / B Hornet, the Escuadróns 121 and 122
- Grupo 43 with two squadrons fighting aircraft Canadair CL- 215T, the Escuadróns 431 and 432
- Grupo 45 with a VIP Season machines Airbus A310, Dassault Falcon 900, the Escuadrón 451
- Grupo 47 with two seasons for different tasks, the Escuadróns 471 ( Boeing 707 tanker ) and 472 ( Airbus Military C-212, Dassault Falcon 20 )
- CLAEX, an experimental unit with a scale C - 101EB, the Escuadrón 541
In addition to the Air Force and the Civil Guard uses the military part of the airport, it has stationed here CASA CN- 235M ( T.19B ) patrol aircraft.
NATO operates in Torrejon since February 7, 2013, one of two Combined Air Operations Centre ( CAOC ). The area of operations of the local center extends from the Azores to Hungary and Turkey. The counterpart for Northern Europe is in Uedem.
Civil use
It is open for general aviation, but due to the modern expansion and enormous capacity reserves of the ten- kilometer west past the airport Madrid -Barajas its importance today is low. Here flights under instrument flight conditions are possible only for aircraft with a total weight of 2000-50000 Kilogramm total weight. Also considered the upper limit of 50 tons take-off mass for visual flight conditions.
