Madrid- Torrejon (Spanish: Aeropuerto Madrid- Torrejón ) is an airport located in the Spanish town of Torrejón de Henares, about 22 kilometers northeast of Madrid. The airport is used as a base Aérea de Torrejón de Henares by the Spanish Air Force.

History

Between 1957 and 1992, was the military airfield, next Moron and Zaragoza, as one of three bases, the base of operations of several units of the U.S. Air Force, first strategic bombers of SAC and after 1966 interceptor USAFE, among other things, was here for years the 401st Tactical Fighter Wing. Here was also the headquarters of the 16th Air Force, which supervises all USAF units in Spain.

Military use

In addition to the Air Force and the Civil Guard uses the military part of the airport, it has stationed here CASA CN- 235M ( T.19B ) patrol aircraft.

NATO operates in Torrejon since February 7, 2013, one of two Combined Air Operations Centre ( CAOC ). The area of ​​operations of the local center extends from the Azores to Hungary and Turkey. The counterpart for Northern Europe is in Uedem.

Civil use

It is open for general aviation, but due to the modern expansion and enormous capacity reserves of the ten- kilometer west past the airport Madrid -Barajas its importance today is low.
