Mahmoud Fayad

Mahmoud Fayad (Arabic: محمود فياض, DMG Mahmoud Fayad, * 1926, † 17 December 2002 ) was an Egyptian weightlifter and Olympic champion in 1948 at featherweight.

Career

Mahmoud Fayad began in Alexandria in the sports school of his brother, who was Egyptian wrestling champion, also with rings. But he soon found out that the weight lifting is the more appropriate for him sport and specialized in it. He joined the Olympic Club Alexandria and trained diligently in the coach Aziz Talaat bey. At age 16, he won the area championship of Alexandria with 275 kg in the Olympic triathlon. In 1941 he won the first time the Egyptian Championship featherweight 305 kg in the next few years he continued to make progress, but did not participate in his first international championship until 1946 because of the war. The Olympic gold medal in the featherweight in London in 1948 was the highlight of his career. As he became increasingly important problems after 1951 and also a back injury was misdiagnosed, he finished already with 27 years of his active career. In civilian life Fayad was a tram conductor.

(Note: the world records of Popov, USSR in beidarmigen tearing with 106, 107 and 108 kg in 1937 to 1939 and in pushing with 127.5 and 136 kg in the years 1936 and 1937 were never recognized by the International Weightlifting Federation IAAF because the USSR at that time was not a member of this association. )
