March of Turin

The Margraviate of Turin (Italian: Marca di Torino) was a political entity in northern Italy from the mid-10th century. Other names for this area are: Marca arduinica after the first Margrave Arduin Glaber, Count of Auriate. They covered the area between Turin in the north, the western Alps, and Albenga and Ventimiglia in the south. As centers of Mark Turin and Albenga apply.

In 950 Berengar of Ivrea was King of Italy. At the beginning of the following year he completed the reorganization of the military structures south of the Po from which his predecessor Hugo had I started with the aim to be better prepared against Saracen raids from the sea. He made three new territories for which he appointed the faithful with the first hour Margrave:

  • The Marca Liguria Occidentale ( East Ligurian Riviera ), he gave Oberto of Luni, the progenitor of the Lombard Obertenghi which was named after him Marca Obertengha
  • The Marca Liguria Orientale ( Westliguren ), which followed in the West, and he gave Aleramo, the ancestor of the Frankish descent Aleramiden that was after him called Marca Aleramica, and
  • The Margraviate of Turin, which was still further west, and that he, Count of Auriate gave Arduin Glaber, the head of the Frankish descent Arduine.

The area north of the Po ( with the exception of the area around Vercelli) remained as the Margraviate of Ivrea reduced (or Marca Anscarica - by a different name for the reigning House of Burgundy - Ivrea ) exist.

Like the other margravates also, the Margraviate of Turin had in that stretch no permanent stock. The root area Arduin, Auriate was lost by inheritance, here was the Margraviate of Saluzzo, the Margraviate stretched north of the Po (Novara, Vercelli). With the extinction of the ducal family in the late 11th century, it then passed to the House of Savoy, which thereby could significantly expand its influence in northern Italy.
